Demonstrating sustainable food systems, renewable energy solutions, and Ag-STEAM learning in an urban environment.
MSK’s Applied Research Urban Farm in Ward 7, Washington, DC serves as a demonstration site where sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and community stewardship come together. The site functions as a living laboratory where youth, seniors, volunteers, and community members engage directly in practical solutions that address food production, environmental resilience, and neighborhood revitalization.
Through this applied research model, MSK develops and tests integrated systems that strengthen food access, build environmental knowledge, and support workforce development. By combining hands-on learning with real-world implementation, participants gain experience in agriculture, sustainability, and energy systems while contributing to measurable community outcomes.
These approaches are designed to be practical and adaptable, allowing schools, community organizations, and neighborhoods to replicate and apply similar models within their own environments.
